Nordstrom How to Succeed by Selling Just One Shoe free essay sample
When going into the store they want to make sure that you are treated with ââ¬Å"loveâ⬠and respect. They refer to their business strategy as ââ¬Å"greed through loveâ⬠. ââ¬Å"They have perfected the art of focusing on the right customers and giving them undivided attention. A salesperson will often continue the relationship with a customer for years. â⬠Nordstromââ¬â¢s salespeople treat you in a way that makes you feel important. They want you to feel as if you are their only customer, and their most important customers. As times have hanged, more consumers have gone toward self-service and Nordstromââ¬â¢s hasnââ¬â¢t been afraid to go in that same direction. They now offer online shopping, as well as thru mail order catalogs. ââ¬Å"The company now aims for a ââ¬Å"seamlessâ⬠shopping experience across all sales channels, whether mail order, online or in-store. â⬠By making everything seamless they can continue to meet the high expectations that are set forth by the consumer that shop at Nordstromââ¬â¢s. We will write a custom essay sample on Nordstrom: How to Succeed by Selling Just One Shoe or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page A store that would fall at the opposite end of the continuum would be a factory outlet, or an off-price retailer, such as a Bobââ¬â¢s Discount Furniture, a TJ Maxx, or a Marshallââ¬â¢s.These stores sell items that couldnââ¬â¢t be sold off in regular stores, whether it be due to bankruptcy, cancelled orders, or defects. They arenââ¬â¢t known for the high quality merchandise or the high customer service levelââ¬â¢s that Nordstrom is known for. Unlike Nordstromââ¬â¢s, which allows you to return any item that you purchase, these stores generally operate with a ââ¬Å"final sale policyâ⬠ââ¬â once you purchase an item, it cannot be returned, regardless of the reason you may want to return it. 3. Analyze the six components of Nordstromââ¬â¢s retailing mix to determine which have been the most important to the companyââ¬â¢s success.Provide a detailed rationale. There are six components to the retailing mix ââ¬â product, place, promotion, pricing, presentation and personnel. Nordstromââ¬â¢s effectively uses each one of these components to contribute to its success. First, is product, which is the width and depth of the product assortment. This is the number of items displayed, and the quality of the items that are sold. By separating each item into different departments, Nordstromââ¬â¢s is able to display the quality of its product in the best possible way. Second is place, the locations of the stores, and the hours in which the stores are open. This is where selective distribution comes into play. ââ¬Å"Nordstrom has 157 stores in 27 states, but they plan to open 19 more by 2010, expanding into Boston, Ohio, and other untapped U. S. markets. â⬠By limiting where Nordstromââ¬â¢s are located, this allows them to maintain a superior product image, and charge a premium price for the products. The third component is promotion ââ¬â the advertising, publicity and public relations. Nordstromââ¬â¢s doesnââ¬â¢t rely on promotions as much as they do ââ¬Å"word-of-mouth. â⬠ââ¬Å"This kind of word-of-mouth publicity means that Nordstrom spends much less on traditional advertising than its competitors do.And the stories told by satisfied customers are much more persuasive than an ad in the Sunday Paper. â⬠One of the stories that are told in the article is of the customer service rep who sold the woman with one leg one shoe. Not only did the store gain a life-long customer from that experience, but that story may have driven in countless patrons to shop at Nordstromââ¬â¢s after hearing this womanââ¬â¢s experience. A satisfied customer will on average tell 2 to 3 people about their experience. Those 2 to 3 people could generate 2 to 3 sales for the sales person, and those 2 people could each tell 2 people. Word-of-mouth can become very lucrative for the original sales person. The fourth component is price. With Nordstromââ¬â¢s, this goes hand in hand with promotion. They sell their items at full price, believing that the price and quality of the items should speak for themselves. People should not go into the store expecting to get a great deal on an item, but more so to get a quality item. ââ¬Å"We donââ¬â¢t rely on promotions, be it one-day sales, coupons, or ââ¬Ëfriends of friendsââ¬â¢ sales. We think our regular pricing has to have integrity. â⬠Nordstromââ¬â¢s believes that people will treat themselves to a higher quality item, even if the price is higher. The fifth part of the marketing mix is presentation. This is the layout and the atmosphere of the location. Nordstromââ¬â¢s has a ââ¬Å"high-classâ⬠feel to their shops. They keep the merchandise in neat, uncluttered arrangements, making it easy for consumers to browse the products, and to find what they want. The knowledgeable, friendly salespeople also add to the atmosphere. The sixth and final part of the marketing mix is the personnel. It incorporates the customer services and personal selling aspects. This is the most important factor of the mix for Nordstromââ¬â¢s. The salespeople are willing to go above and beyond for their customers. For example, the article tells a story of a salesperson who paid for a taxi to the airport with her own money so a customer who left their plane tickets in the store would not miss their flight. This is not something youââ¬â¢d expect from a store, and it is what put Nordstromââ¬â¢s ahead of the pack in the customer service or personnel department. Patrick McCarthy, who was the first salesperson to generate $1 million in sales, is a great example of this. He kept handwritten notes on all of his 12,000 customers over the years. ââ¬Å"Most companies are head experiences ââ¬â bean counters are running them. When the heart is running them, it becomes exciting. â⬠By putting their heart into their selling, the salespeople at Nordstromââ¬â¢s are able to go above and beyond, creating a one-of-a-kind shopping experience for their customers. 4. Discuss the primary challenges Nordstrom faces in the current retail climate. One of the primary challenges that Nordstrom faces is changing with the times. People are changing how they want and need to shop. People no longer always need to go into the stores to do their shopping. Many consumers are now turning to online shopping.Stores are open 24/7 on the internet, something your average department store canââ¬â¢t do. Nordstromââ¬â¢s direct President Jamie Nordstrom noticed that not all items a customer could purchase in the store were available online. This limited possible sales opportunities to the stores. Nordstromââ¬â¢s needed to change not only where the items were available, but also how a customer could obtain the item. Jamie Nordstrom also noticed that if a customer purchased an item online, they were not able to return the item to the store. The inability to return to the item to the store challenged their generous return policy. This return policy is something that Nordstromââ¬â¢s is known for. ââ¬Å"Nordstrom is also known for its generous exchange policy. In a familiar story that has been forwarded around the internet for years, a man claims he was allowed to return snow tires, even though the store never sold auto parts. [â⬠¦] Even though the company loses some money on returns, they believe itââ¬â¢s worth keeping customers coming back. â⬠By adjusting their return policy, now allowing customers who purchase online to return items to the store, they are able to keep this standard and overcome a possible challenge. 5. Discuss how the competition has changed in recent years, along with consumer expectations. Competition and customerââ¬â¢s expectations have changed a lot in recent years. Full-service is not expected as much anymore because consumers have moved more toward self-service. Consumers are used to helping themselves with limited or no-help from sales people. This has driven competition from numerous on-line only retailers, such as Amazon. com. Consumers can also use online shopping to compare prices of different retailers to see where they are getting the best quality and the best price. Consumers do expect to find the same quality items in the retail stores as they do on the online sites. If a store is not nearby, but there is an item they wish to purchase, the customer needs the ability to order this item online. They also except that they will get the same high quality item shipped to them that they would get if they walked into a retail location and purchased the item. By expanding what they sell, and where they sell, Nordstromââ¬â¢s can continue to profit and grow in the coming years. ? Gladin, S. (2003, January 01). How customer service works.

buy custom Sun, Wind and Drain essay
buy custom Sun, Wind and Drain essay The article under consideration deals with the problems related to the use of solar energy in comparison to the conventional sources of energy in modern terms. The article is headlined Sun, Wind and Drain and has been published on The Economist website on June 26, 2014. The issues raised in the paper are of great importance to environmentalists, scientists, policymakers as well as everyone who is interested in the perspective use of alternative sources of energy. The article discusses the recent conception of assessment of benefits that are drawn from the use of particular source of energy which has been introduced by Charles Frank. According to it, the solar energy is considered to be the most expansive alternative to the conventional sources of energy and the most expansive way of reduction of gas-emissions and diminishing of green-house effect. As it has been mentioned, the article is based upon the newly introduced paper discussing the benefits of solar energy in comparison to the use of fuel or gas. The paper was headlined The Net Benefits of Low and No-carbon Electricity Technologies and written by Charles Frank. From the very beginning, the author asserts that the expenses of the government on the subsidizing of developments in the sphere of alternative energy sources are beyond the reasonable limits. At the same time, he states that even though we can calculate the costs needed for the production and use of solar energy, the cost of electricity is hard to assess as it depends upon the amount of fuel used, time of plant operations, costs of capital, etc. In order to calculate all of this, the economists have invented the term levelised costs which refers to both operational and capital expenses. However, this term keeps silent upon so-called intermittency costs. Indeed, the demand for electricity tends to increase every day, and it is often rather intense during the daytime. At the same time, wind energy largely depends on the weather; sometimes, there are calm days when no or little electricity is produced. The same way, solar energy is available only during the daytime. Therefore, I have now to agree with the author who states that even in case of costs equality, the value of electricity that is produced by alternative sources is lower than the one obtained from the conventional sources of energy. The article goes on discussing Franks approach to the estimation of benefits of each energy source. He asserts that the cheapest energy source that does not produce carbon emissions is nuclear power. However, building the plants producing it is rather expansive though it is still cheaper than the further development and construction of green-energy plants, since the unstable functioning of the latter due to the factors described above requires the preservation of the conventional sources of energy. The article ends up with conclusion that the most effective technology aimed at production of energy with zero emissions is nuclear power. The a uthor notes that whereas most of the developed countries still support the investigations in the field of alternative energy sources, the most pragmatic ones are investing money in building nuclear plants promising both gas emissions reduction and lower price for the decrease of green house effect. It is recommended to better focus upon the reduction of emissions than financing extremely expensive projects related to the elaboration of ways of alternative energy sources use. To some extent, I agree with the author since the perspective of a widespread use of solar or wind energy is still beyond the horizon, whereas nowadays we all face the negative effects of increased gas and fuel emissions. In my opinion, the problem of the latest is more urgent thus has to be addressed first. At the same time, states should focus upon elaboration of the less expensive alternatives for emissions reduction than the use of solar, wind, or other zero-carbon energy. Oedipus Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1
Oedipus - Essay Example The story takes a slight twist when the prophet Tiresias predicts a curse if Polynices is not buried and Antigon is not released. The king finally gives in, but this comes a bit late as when Polynices is being buried Haemonââ¬â¢s cry is being heard from the tomb, Antigon dies hanging on a noose (Petterson 18). The fate of Antigon could have been controlled by her in different ways. First, being aware of the kingââ¬â¢s pride as evidenced by his willingness to defy even the gods, she should have not attempted to rebury Polynices. After knowing of the kingââ¬â¢s plan to kill her, she should have fled till the king was dead. Thirdly when she was condemned to death, she should not have taken her life. Her death cannot be blamed on the curse because the curse had not yet been spelt. The major role she had that led to her fateful death was committing suicide. Petterson M. Obsessive-Complusive PD Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Obsessive-Complusive PD - Essay Example Most of their waking hours are spent in worrying about unwanted thoughts and mental images (Hyman & Pedrick, 2009, p.7). People suffering from obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are incapable of leading a normal life as their obsession draws most of their energy, and most of their actions are influenced by their obsessions. Hence, the only way to cure the Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is to manage the obsessive thoughts through different psychological therapies, as only by managing and understanding the nature of obsessive and compulsive thoughts can one manage the obsessive-compulsive behavior. Definition To understand OCD, it is important to define the words ââ¬Ëobsessionââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëcompulsionââ¬â¢. DSM-IV (1994) defines obsession as ââ¬Å"persistent ideas, thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause marked anxiety or distressâ⬠(Jakes, 1996, p.6). DSM-IV (1994) defines compulsions as ââ¬Å"the r epetitive behavior and mental actsâ⬠which are intended ââ¬Å"to remove anxiety or distress and not to provide pleasure or gratificationâ⬠(Jakes, 1996, p.6). Hence, according to DSM-IV (1994), OCD can be diagnosed when the excessiveness and the unreasonable nature of the obsessive and compulsive behavior and thoughts is realized by the people suffering from it (Jakes, 1996, p.6). ... To cure OCD, it is necessary to understand the cause of it. Nature Of OCD Researches in past 60 years have found that OCD is a disorder that depends on different factors (Pauls, Alsobrook, Goodman, Rasmussen & Leckman, 1995, p.76), and hence, it is not easy to reach the conclusion regarding its nature. Familial history was found to be factor in some cases of OCD, while in other cases, there was no evidence of familial history (Pauls et al., 1995, p.76). This shows that the basis of OCD is still controversial. It was widely believed that the genes are responsible for the OCD in human beings (Arnold & Richter, 2001, p. 1353). However, no specific genetic factor has been identified as responsible for OCD (Arnold & Richter, 2001, p. 1353). This led the researchers to believe that when the ââ¬Å"underlying genetic susceptibilityâ⬠interacts with the environmental risk factors, then it results in obsessive-compulsive behavior pattern and leads to development of OCD in that person (Ar nold & Richter, 2001, p. 1353). Hence, it is very necessary to detect the OCD as soon as the symptoms start appearing in a person. However, it has been found that most of the times, OCD goes undetected. OCD is not common in young children (Heyman, Fombonne, Simmons, Ford, Meltzer & Goodman, 2001, p.324). However, the rate of OCD in young adults in their puberty has been found to be increasing (Heyman et al., 2001, p.324). Hence, it is important to detect OCD early to manage it in behavior. Researches in many countries have revealed that one out of every forty people suffer from OCD (Hyman & Pedrick, 2009, p.17). OCD develops gradually in personality (Hyman & Pedrick, 2009, p.19). However, an unexpected distressing event in

Personal Statement Prompt #2 Essay Example for Free
Personal Statement Prompt #2 Essay PERSONAL STATEMENT Prompt #2: Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud, and how does it relate to the person you are? Iââ¬â¢ve never been so interested in my spiritual life, my religion, and my service to others as I have been these past three years. One of the proudest moments of my life is when I was accepted into my schoolââ¬â¢s LIFE team, which stands for Living in Faith Experience. The trips, retreats, and activities that I have shared with my peers have formed me into a completely new person and have allowed me to experience things that I wouldnââ¬â¢t have been able to experience on my own. Being able to be a part of the LIFE team is an accomplishment that has given me many opportunities, and has showed me ways that I can go out into the world and grab hold of the millions of other opportunities that awaits me. This particular team isnââ¬â¢t like the sports and organizations that my school offers. You first have to be nominated by three teachers or administrators, which allows you to receive an application. The end of my freshman year, I received an application, and I was confused. I wasnââ¬â¢t too sure of what exactly the team was, except for the fact they were religious and helped the campus minister out. The application did not only involve basic information, it also required short answers for approximately 15 questions. I ignored the fact that it was so time consuming because I enjoyed having to think about the answers, which were new to me. Later in the week, I was called into our Campus Ministerââ¬â¢s office and was interviewed. The questions allowed me, for once, to just be me and talk about what Iââ¬â¢ve been through and what I want for my future. Just being myself paid off, in a way that changed my whole high school career and life. The person that LIFE team has helped make me is much more open, compassionate, and helpful. From small groups on the retreats, large group discussions in class, and getting guidance through liturgies, I have opened up to where I can more easily express myself. I learned the importance of trusting people and being trusted. From being a servant leader, I have deepened my qualities of compassion and being helpful. LIFE team is focused on being good leaders for others, while being a servant to them and to Christ. Iââ¬â¢m able to learn something and actually feel anxious to go and teach others the same. I couldnââ¬â¢t be more proud of the wayà that Iââ¬â¢ve progressed in my spiritual knowledge, deepened in my faith, and have become much more willing to open up and try new things. Being a part of the LIFE team for these past 3 years is an accomplishment for myself, a contribution to our school and society, and has helped me to better portray the qualities that I want and need to expose in order to be the best person that I can be.

Brand Management Article Review
Introduction: Review: Teresa da Silva Lopes & Mark Casson (Winter, 2007). Entrepreneurship and the Development of Global Brands: Business History Review 81 by The President and Fellows of Harvard College (Extract from page 651-680) Worldââ¬â¢s economy in early 1980s leaded to the merger wave in business industries. Only few independent brands have survived during that period. In the article, the authors addressed the question of why so few independent brands survived and they also aim to address about the contribution of entrepreneurs to the successful and growth of the companies. The authors also of demonstrated some well-known brands and their related case of how did the change in ownership affect the brand name. Summary: Entrepreneurship and innovation is a competitive asset for each organization. In the past time, entrepreneur refers to the founder of the business, but the definition was expanded overtime. In the article, authors define entrepreneur as ââ¬Å"someone who specia lizes in taking judgmental decisions about the coordination of scarce resources with an economic aim and under conditions of uncertainty. This means that the entrepreneur is not necessarily a capitalist or the founder of a business, but is someone who is not afraid of risk and who ââ¬Å"gets things doneâ⬠and has an economic aim. Because of the changing in business environment, today entrepreneur has more skills, business related knowledge and capabilities in expanding their brand into different geography or internationally or rejuvenate it in order to keep the popularity and still make a profit. Brand is a powerful strategic tool to distinguish company from its competitors, communicate to customer and attract customer loyalty.A brand can have a rise, and then fall out of favor, to be out of date by the arrival of new brand. Trajectory of brands or the life of each brand is surely depends on the companyââ¬â¢s performance and strategies they decide to take in action so as to create brand personalities for their products or services. Without careful management, brands can follow the general pattern of a product lifecycle: moving through introduction, growth, maturity, and decline stages in a relatively rapid fashion. Authors indicate that the change in brand ownership or management team may take into account when discussing about trajectory of brands. Thus to keep the brand forever young is necessary mission that each company need to achieve. Some brands become successful immediately after introduced into the market and it remains successful until now under the single ownership and management team but some become successful after their previous ownership or management team was changed. Various strategies are suggested by the author as they are implemented by several successful brands such as the extension of an existing brand (Asahi Super Dry), or by the creation of a new brand, or by forging a compromise between the two (Nescafe). The firm may also hire new managers and consultants in order to boost temporarily the creative resources at the firmââ¬â¢s disposal (as happened in the case of KitKat). Another strategy suggested is to change the firmââ¬â¢s recruitment policies and hiring new managers with stronger entrepreneurial capabilities to obtain a permanent solution. Furthermore, using merger and acquisition strategy to change the brand ownership enable some multi-firm brands especially the companies in food, drink, and cosmetics industries become successful and stay young.Brand rejuvenation in the article refers to ââ¬Å"tweaking the brand image to appeal to a new generation of consumersâ⬠. Rejuvenation of the brand should be take into action when customer in the market lose their concentration on the existing one or the traditional market for a brand may stagnate, unacceptable to an emerging market for the brand or there is an increase in demand for products or services, because in order to be well suited to the cult ure, demand, preference of different group of customer and to create availability of the products they want wherever they are.Based on the study, the authors conclude that successful global brand usually originate in developed countries. It takes very long time to build their brand personalities and recognition. Strategies of brand extensions that we often see are merger and acquisition, franchising, licensing and some brands are trades as pieces of intellectual property. Critic Negative: Brand rejuvenation is a strategic tool for the company to recapture market share and to keep the brands up to date for consumers, but not all brand should be rejuvenated since due to two main reasons.Firstly, some brand is very harmful to people health and society. For example, tobacco and alcohol products have many harmful effects are not limited to only health-related issues but as well as a whole society will suffer from its effects. Smoking cigarettes opens the possibility to the people that ar e around you to breathe second-hand smoke. This increases the risk of cancer in others around you. Also, smoke is bad for the environment and the ozone layer whereby people who drink and drive may cause many road accident and they tend to commit violence in the family more that people who do not.Secondly, the negative point of brand rejuvenation is the decrease in physical communication due to the growth in technology related branding. In the past, people spend more time to talk to their friends, colleges and family but presently, digital form of communication decrease social interaction. Because the development of technology, many company try to rejuvenate their brand by introducing high- tech product to the market. Most people believe that technology such as cell phones and e-mail has made their lives easier. From e-mails, to Facebook, to television, people are becoming dependent on technology; we cannot live without our iPhones. As a real example that happen to myself, sometimes I spend a whole day in bedroom just to tweet, facebook and surfing internet; I do not interact with people around at all within whole day. People are distancing themselves from life off- line. This create distant of people interaction from day to day. Positive: We totally agree with the authors who state that entrepreneurs contribute to the growth of a firm and brand succeeds and innovation, intelligence and skills are the required factors to build a successful brand. Brand building is an important issue in strategic marketing and driving force for shareholderââ¬â¢s value.Good brand image and brand recognition in the market is what all entrepreneurs and managements intend to get. The growth and development of a firm mostly depends on the motivation and ambition of the owner itself. Among the important features of an entrepreneur that effects the firm growth involves general background of the owner involving age and education of the owner along with his growth motivation and manage ment know how organizational practices on the behalf of entrepreneurs. Innovative idea and technological capabilities of entrepreneur also the contribution factors that each entrepreneur should care about. We also agree with the authors that brand rejuvenation is a great tool to make more money. Brand rejuvenation is the effort to bring a brand which could not make money into the one that can generate money for company by using new positioning or communication strategy. Normally, companies decide to rejuvenate their brand in order to respond to internal and external changes. For example when new competitors come into the market, they may have taken over the category and the company is struggling to generate revenues from the current product, thus company need to rejuvenate their brand or new option has to be launched.Another reason is when the existing product or service is in declining stage of product life cycle, it is an appropriate time to rejuvenate the brand in order to recaptu re the market share. Some other reason why company should rejuvenate their brand is to shed the negative image of the existing brand, to incorporate in new mission or develop a new brand when repositioning. Moreover, the target market for the brand has aged so the brand has to renew its positioning in the minds of the next generation of consumers. Because brand may no longer meet the consumersââ¬â¢ needs or desires, where in the consumer has shifted to a different platform. Conclusion After reading and reviewing this article, we got more ideas on how branding is very important for each company in generate the profit in long term, how entrepreneur contribute to the firm growth and success. The authors provide enough reasons to support their article by indicated real example of some major brand how they are developed to become the global one. The authors indicate two main strategies for brand development which are entrepreneurship and brand rejuvenation. Brand rejuvenation can lead the company to capture market share as well as to compete in the market effectively in the long run.
